Stormy Sunday-Monday Night Forecast

Severe thunderstorms pounded Laredo earlier this afternoon. Hail up to the size of baseballs accompanied the first storm along with wind gusts up to 75 MPH. A second storm not long after rolled in with more hail and damaging wind gusts. I’ve seen a few photos from town showing damage to structures, including a fire station. Never underestimate supercells rolling across the border into Texas. They tend to form during the mid-afternoon hours int he higher elevations of Northeast Mexico and move east into Southern Texas. We’ve got a sub-severe storm moving into Texas just north of Eagle Pass and a line of severe storms passing just south of the border near McAllen. Light to moderate rain is moving northeast across southern North Texas into Central Texas. Other patchy rain/storms are moving northeast across Southeast Texas into South-Central Texas.

Our expectation is that thunderstorm will tend to increase in coverage late tonight, generally after midnight, cross South-Central Texas east into Southeast Texas. A boundary is sitting across both of those regions. That boundary will tend to focus convective coverage late tonight. We could see scattered showers and storms extend as far north as Interstate 20 tonight from the Big Country east to D/FW, and along/south of Interstate 30 in Northeast Texas. A few of these storms may be strong with quarter size hail and localized damaging wind gusts. We also may see some scattered storms in the Texas Panhandle tonight that will move east toward Western Oklahoma. There is the potential for localized heavy rain and flash flooding in Southeast Texas. Storms should tend to keep moving, so the threat for ‘training’ storms and more widespread flash flooding should be kept at bay.
